Goodman Ranch proudly offers the rare opportunity to pursue the Père David’s Deer, one of the most unique and exotic trophy animals available for hunters in Tennessee. Also known as Elaphurus davidianus, this species is the only living member of its genus, making it a truly special addition to any hunter’s collection.
Once hunted to near extinction in China during the 19th century, Père David’s deer were preserved through conservation efforts and captive breeding in European zoos. Today, they remain a rare species—and harvesting one is a remarkable accomplishment for any big game hunter.

Père David’s deer are very large, with adults typically weighing between 330–440 pounds, though some males reach up to 500 pounds and stand nearly 4 feet tall at the shoulder. Their coats change seasonally—from a reddish-tan in summer to a muted gray in winter.
Their antlers are especially distinctive. Unlike other deer species, the main beam grows upward while the long tines curve backward, giving them a rare and striking appearance. Antlers can measure 25–35 inches in length, and these deer often grow two sets per year. The summer antlers are the largest and drop in November, while a second set grows and sheds in January.
Because of this cycle, the best time to book a Père David’s deer hunt in Tennessee is during these prime antler stages for a truly impressive mount.
As one of the rarest trophy animals available, the Père David’s deer is a must-have for serious hunters and collectors. With their size, rarity, and unique antlers, they represent an unforgettable addition to any trophy room.
